Ed wrote to us saying he smelled sewage as he crossed the Otis Redding Bridge many nights.  We contacted the Macon Water Authority to find out about sewage spills at the Ocmulgee River.

The Macon Water Authority it has no idea where a late night smell near the Otis Redding bridge could be coming from, and they don't believe it's them.

Mark Wyzalek with the company says they have no ongoing projects near the bridge that crosses over the Ocmulgee.  He also says they have no sewer spills in that area either.

Still, the MWA has had problems there in the past.

In September 2009, a sewer line break threatened Macon's levee, leaving the authority to fight two major leaks that sent between 4 and 6 million gallons of sewage into the Ocmulgee a day.

Later that year in November, the authority continued to deal with the sewer line break that put a temporary pipe through Central City Park.

Two and a half million gallons leaked into the river when workers shut down pumps to finish repairs. That caused lines to back up and the sewage to spill into the river.

In January more than 3 million gallons of sewage spilled into local waterways after heavy rains. The authority said 390,000 gallons spilled into the Ocmulgee River.
