Shirley wrote to us wanting to know why her tax and garbage bill from the Macon-Bibb Tax Commissioner's office came with the Lawrenceville zip code of 30043. She wondered why the office couldn't mail the bill itself and why it had to use a company from so far away.
We contacted Thomas Tedders Macon-Bibb's Tax Commissioner. He says Mail Sort Macon, a local company, stuffs, sorts and ships out mail across Central Georgia, including bills from the Macon-Bibb Tax Commissioner's office.
Tedders says his office uses the company for all of its mass mailings.
Company owner, Terry Godfree says his business uses its Atlanta-area office to handle big jobs that can include your tax and garbage statements.
He says that allows him to send out mail at a cheaper cost, because it combines with mail shipped from that office. That saves almost ten cents a piece on their mail.
"The work is too labor intensive and time consuming to be handled in our office and would require a tremendous amount of overtime, which would be at greater cost to the taxpayers. I believe in offering the most efficient work at the most financially feasible cost to the taxpayers. Which we do using a local business," said Tedders.
