McCarthy said highlighting his district, and alma mater, will be top priorities.

"Northeast and Bibb County, we don't always get the positive publicity that we should," McCarthy said, "There are great things going on at Northeast, great things going on in Bibb County, and so I take it as one of my personal responsibilities to highlight those things and I'm really excited about that."

McCarthy attended Bibb public schools as a child and graduated from Northeast High School. He teaches English Language Arts at Northeast.

He returned to school Monday, to handshakes and congratulations from colleagues and students.

School staff and district leaders plans to honor McCarthy at an afternoon reception at the high school.
