A string of accidents closed both eastbound lanes of I-16 Wednesday afternoon and injured three Macon-Bibb County firefighters and a Savannah man in the process.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the first crash occurred just after noon between a tractor trailer and a Toyota near mile marker 2 by the Macon Convention Center. Minutes later, that accident caused another collision between a charter bus and a Ford Explorer
GSP spokesman Gordy Wright reports that, as state troopers worked the two crashes, the Macon-Bibb fire department prepared to leave the scene when two other tractor trailers then collided.
One of the trucks struck the right rear of the fire truck with the left front part of the truck's cab.
Wright says the injured firefighters were outside their truck at the time of the crash.
The driver of the tractor trailer, Antonio Jenkins, age 54, of Savannah was taken to the Medical Center of Central Georgia with the firefighters: David Mahone, 31; Marcus Lamb, 42; and Keith Carter, 33.
The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
