Former Macon Mayor C. Jack Ellis hopes to turn the recent fatal shooting of Shar'bora Daniels into a community rallying cry against violence.

During a Friday morning news conference, Ellis called her death "a senseless act of violence." He said people should be as outraged over Daniels death as they were last year over the murder of Mercer University law shool graduate Lauren Giddings.

Daniels died last week from a single gunshot wound to the head. The incident happened while she played video games at home with her brother.

Authorties don't know why it happened or who fired the shot. The case remains under investigation.

"Just as we were upset last year this time when a young law student was brutally murdered in our town, I think we have to speak out when this promising young woman lost her life," Ellis said.

"We cannot allow this just to go as a blurb, a blurb in the newspaper or on television or radio and we never hear anything more about it," he said.

Ellis also noted that Daniels had been a good high school student, earning A's and B's in her courses.

He also noted that Daniels had been accepted at two colleges, Macon State and Clark Atlanta University.

Ellis said he's working with Clark University President Carlton Brown  in hopes of establishing a scholarship in Daniel's name at the university.
