Some Georgia drivers said they have waited for over two hours to get their license renewed at the Department of Driver Services in Milledgeville. A spokeswoman for the state's DDS is apologizing for the long wait times that drivers have been experiencing across the state as the department gets used to implementing the new license requirements.
Jessica Wood of Milledgeville came to the DDS with all of her documents ready for her license renewal, but she ended up spending most of her morning waiting to be seen.
"I've been here since 9:30, 9:45, and I am here to get my license renewed, and I am still waiting and it's going on 11:40 now," said Wood. "I have kids, I have other appointments to get to, so I am trying to get through with my day, and being here all day isn't helping me get through anything else I have to do."
Other drivers that we talked to said that they have been waiting anywhere from an hour and 45 minutes to two-and-a-half hours to get their license renewed.
"I didn't expect to wait this long. It's kind of frustrating sitting here because I got other things to do today, and like I said, I've been here for 2 1/2 hours and really would like to go back to work," said Brian Beck of Gray.
Adam Martin of Milledgeville said that he thinks the new license process is a big part of the reason why he and other drivers spend so much time waiting.
"It's the new requirements, it's the fact that they have to go through so much paper work," said Martin. "It's the fact that they have to get copies of everything, and you know they are going to have backlogs they're going to have this time that they're going to have to spend with every single person just to make sure that they're not illegal."
Susan Sports, the Public Information Officer for Department of Driver Services, sent us this statement. Here it is in it's entirety.
"Department of Driver Services (DDS) continues to address concerns over the lengthy wait times that customers have been experiencing statewide since last Tuesday's implementation of new Federal identification requirements (REAL ID Act of 2005). DDS is monitoring the waits very closely and has just recently expanded the list of acceptable documents to prove full social security number and the list of residency documents since customers now have to provide TWO (2) proofs of residency. Customers are urged if at all possible to postpone any visit to DDS until the new process has been operational for several weeks. It will take time for the driver examiners and customers to become accustomed to the new system. In the meantime, there are many online services still available like ordering a replacement for a lost license or making a change of address. Please urge your viewers to visit www.dds.gov to create a customer check list of acceptable documents before they visit so they will be prepared and bring all the necessary requirements. Tuesday continues to be the DDS' busiest day statewide. Again, I apologize for the unacceptable wait times and be assured DDS has heard the concerns of customers and are determined to get control of the situation. "
