The family of an 18-year old Hawkinsville girl is mourning her death after a Saturday morning shooting.
According to Todd Lowery with the Eastman GBI office, 33-year-old Birago Blackshear is charged with the murder of Ashton Bartlett.
Her family says Blackshear was a former boyfriend, and they tried to warn her about signs of trouble.
Showing pictures of her daughter's life, Michelle Bartlett says they show her daughter's beauty, but not her whole story.
She said, "She was planning on going to school. She was supposed to go take her test this morning."
The test she was set to take Monday, would let her study to be a radiologist.
Her mother said Ashton also loved animals, and like most teens, going out with friends.
Her grandmother who she lived with, Beth Bridges, said, "She was always giggly and happy and trying to get into something all the time."
Bridges said she tried to steer Ashton away from trouble. She said, "I worried always, when she wasn't here, because of some of the company she kept."
Bridges wasn't fond of her granddaughter's former boyfriend, Birago Blackshear, who was 15 year's older.
Neither was her father, Jahn Bartlett. He said, "I didn't appreciate the age gap."
They said they couldn't stop the 18-year-old from making her own choices.
They didn't suspect trouble when she left from her grandmother's house with friends, Friday night.
According to the family, Ashton came to McDuffie Street in the early hours of Saturday morning with a male friend. They say she came there to talk to Blackshear. They say when Blackshear saw her arrive with another male friend, he became upset.
Bridges said, "He was just overcome with jealousy I think, was the the main thing. She was trying to run from him, and he just caught up with her and shot her, I guess."
Bartlett died at the hospital with one gunshot in the back, according to Pulaski County Sheriff's investigator, Robert McGriff.
Her mother said, "I just hope if nothing else good comes out of this, that it might save somebody else's life that's in the same situation she was in."
Visitation for Ashton Bartlett is Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Clarke Funeral Home in Hawkinsville.
The funeral is at the same location Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
