Kentucky and Syracuse were No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the Associated Press poll for the past six weeks, though both lost in their conference tournaments.

The Wildcats, the No. 1 overall seed, are stationed in the South Region, while the Orange headline the East Region.

The Tar Heels, the top seed in the Midwest Region, also fell in the ACC title game, while Michigan State won the Big Ten Tournament crown just minutes before the selections were announced. The Spartans, who were not ranked in the preseason top-25, loom large in the West Region.
