The City of Milledgeville could seek legal action against Baldwin County over unpaid SPLOST funds.
A June 14 letter from Mayor Richard Bentley to county officials says the county owes the city $1,037,486 million dollars from the 2005 SPLOST.
Bentley sent a letter to county commissioners explaining that if the funds were not paid by July 1, the city's attorney could move forward with a lawsuit to reclaim "SPLOST money rightfully due to the city and its citizens."
He wrote, in part, "It would appear to me that the county has decided to lay claim and convert the city's portion of the SPLOST funds for its own actions and purposes. This would appear to me to be an unprecedented and illegal action."
He said Wednesday that he's sorry that the dispute has become public, but he still hopes it can be resolved before Sunday, July 1.
Council member Philip Joiner says the goal is to work through this with the county, to come to a solution. He says it's his understanding that not all county officials were made fully aware of the issue, and the letter was sent to bring the problem to light.
