More details released on fatal I-16 accident

Macon police said a fatal accident Tuesday morning on Interstate 16 on the Spring Street bridge occurred after a Mack tractor trailer changed lanes.

That truck hit a 2005 Buick LaCrosse causing it to hit the driver's side of an S-10 pick-up driven by Michael Anthony Thorpe, 47, a Steak-Out delivery driver, a police news release stated.

Thorpe, who was delivering food to Coliseum hospital, was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 81-year-old driver of the Buick ran off the roadway and was transported to the Medical Center of Central Georgia where he is listed in stable condition, according to the news release.

Police did not release the name of the truck driver or say if charges would be filed.

The accident shutdown all eastbound lanes of I-16 just before 11 a.m. and the roadway wasn't reopened until about 4 p.m.
