Veteran gets new home thanks to volunteers

Bobby Lewis details the story of a serviceperson in need.

Service-Source Florida awarded Home Depot with a grant to make the home renovation possible. Miss Rogers got all new appliances in her kitchen, a new bathroom and landscaping.

The last thing to be screwed into the wall was Old Glory.

“It’s awesome. It’s amazing,” said T’Angela Rogers with a smile.

Her new home looked just right.

Since 2000, Rogers has lived at her home in Tampa. Thanks to volunteers from Home Depot, it will be hard to recognize it now.

ServiceSource Florida was awarded a $12,000 grant from The Home Depot Foundation to renovate Rogers’ home. A team of volunteers installed kitchen cabinets, countertops, sink, and appliances; ADA-approved bathroom toilet, sink, vanity, mirror, faucets, and grab bars, and; landscaping, irrigation system, storage shed, BBQ grill, patio set, solar outdoor lighting, and more.

“I just used to say, 'Lord if it’s possible, if it’s one day possible’ and today is my day,” she said.

The volunteers were really touched by Rogers’ appreciation.

“The military services are like fraternities,” said Butch Brown, a 28-year Vet himself. “One always badgers the other ones.”

In a good way.

“A lot of these guys they gave a lot and we should give back,” Curtis Bryant said while cutting irrigation tubing. “We really should give back.”

Rogers, 50, was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force Combat Communications Squadron Division, where she served for 14 years.

“When I signed on the bottom line I knew what I was signing up for and I didn’t do it to be re-payed in the way to this magnitude,” said Rogers. “Just seeing that flag knowing what our country stands for, who we are, I think it’s just going to pull more of that out of me. I really do.”

Her home brings ServiceSource Florida’s total number of renovations to 49. ServiceSource Florida has completed them all in partnership with The Home Depot Foundation.
