AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- The White House says a new jobs report shows the economy is continuing to heal with the private sector adding jobs for 28 straight months but concedes more must be done to recover from the financial crisis and the recession.
Alan Krueger, the chairman of the White House's Council of Economic Advisers, says employment is growing but not fast enough considering the job losses caused by the recession.
He noted one piece of positive news in the report -- a slight increase in the average work week.
The jobs report showed state and local government continued to shed jobs. Krueger said those losses reinforced the case for Obama proposals to end tax breaks for certain businesses and use the revenue to help state and local governments avoid layoffs.
