A bomb threat made to a Columbus, Ga-based national movie theater chain has prompted an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
In a Friday evening news release, special agent Stephen Emmett said, "The FBI's Atlanta Field office is aware of the telephonic threats received by Carmike Cinemas and has initiated a criminal investigation into the matter."
He added that they have not found evidence that any Carmike theaters are in current danger.
The investigation stems from a vague August 16 bomb threat called to Carmike Cinemas corporate offices.
A Carmike official, Terrell Mayton, said the theater company notified law enforcement who conducted searches at the "affected theaters." According to the news release, those searches came up empty.
The theaters have been deemed safe to use.
