CLAYTON, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a dog that fell into a 10-foot deep sewer hole in the northeast Georgia mountains survived for nearly three weeks on raw sewage, rain water and vegetation before being rescued.

Police in Clayton tell WGCL-TV that Phoebe, a lab mix, lost nearly half of her body weight in the ordeal.

Authorities say a passerby, Richard Hahn, heard growling from an open manhole Sunday, and spotted the dog at the bottom of the hole.

Clayton police Sgt. Tim Brown and Officer Richard Hunter attached a cup to a pole to lower water to the dog. They were then able to use the pole to bring the dog to the surface.

Phoebe was reunited with her owner after a city worker posted a photo of her on Facebook.
