One person was killed in a house fire Tuesday at a Fort Valley apartment complex, a 911 dispatcher reported.

Charlie Mae Rogers, 65, was rescued from the building but was pronounced dead at the scene by the Peach County coroner, according to a news release from Fort Valley police chief Lawrence Z. Spurgeon.

An autopsy will be performed late Tuesday or sometime Wednesday to determine the exact cause of death.

Spurgeon told 13WMAZ that the fire appears to have started in Rogers' apartment and that no other units were damaged in the fire, though workers at the complex had not finished their full assessment yet.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations confirmed it is providing crime scene assistance at the request of law enforcement in Fort Valley.

According to the news release, the GBI will help determine the cause and origin of the fire, as well as conduct a full death investigation.

Spurgeon said that calling the GBI for assistance is protocol for investigations involving a fatality and that he did not think there was anything suspicious about the fire or Rogers' death.

The Fort Valley Fire Department responded to the fire just after 11 a.m. at the Valley Pines Apartment Complex.
