SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - State transportation officials say work on the new bridge to Skidaway Island has halted after it was discovered that parts of the high-span structure didn't meet specifications.
Georgia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jill Nagel tells he Savannah Morning News that construction of the main span was put on hold about a month ago after it was determined some girders did not match the elevations called for in the design.
Nagel says the contractor is working on proposals to correct the issue. It isn't known when work will resume. Transportation officials say they don't believe the delay will add to the project's cost.
The $22.5 million concrete bridge is meant to replace the 40-year-old Diamond Causeway drawbridge, which has jammed and caused traffic problems and is becoming harder to repair.
