ATLANTA (AP) - A suburban Atlanta prosecutor has asked a judge to dismiss a case against an illegal immigrant whose arrest for a traffic offense nearly led to her deportation and sparked a wider debate about immigration.
But the judge in the case has previously denied a similar request, and defense lawyers say they suspect political motivations are at play for the elected judge. The judge has not returned a call seeking comment.
Jessica Colotl is accused of giving deputies false contact information during booking. Last year she entered into an agreement with the Cobb County district attorney's office to enter a pretrial diversion program.
The judge initially signed off on the deal but later changed her mind after a media report said the sheriff didn't agree with the decision.
