AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a teenager accused of killing a fellow inmate at the Augusta Youth Development Campus has been sentenced to 17 years in prison.
The Augusta Chronicle reports that 18-year-old Michael Everidge, who pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, was given the sentence Friday.
An autopsy determined that 19-year-old Jade Holder of Sylvester died Nov. 8 of head trauma.
Assistant District Attorney Keith Johnson said Holder and Everidge bumped into each other, exchanged words and agreed to fight each other in Holder's room.
Witnesses told authorities that Holder appeared to be winning the fight and put his arms in the air to signal it was over, but was then thrown to the concrete floor. Johnson said he was then punched and kicked in the head while he was semi-conscious.
