ATLANTA (AP) - Cobb County residents will soon decide whether to renew a 1 percent sales tax that would raise $773 million for school projects over the next five years.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the money would be used by the Cobb County and city of Marietta districts to complete hundreds of capital projects. That work includes repairing or replacing dilapidated buildings and athletic facilities, and constructing a $29 million college and career academy.

Opponents question how officials have used sales tax revenue in the past. Lance Lamberton, president of the Cobb Taxpayers Association, said his group plans to hold forums, debates and rallies to get its message out before the March 19 vote.

If the tax isn't extended, officials said they will have to find another way to fund projects.
