RINCON, Ga. (AP) - Executives at a southeast Georgia manufacturing facility say they've built a transformer described as the largest electrical transformer made in the U.S. in the last 20 years.
Authorities said the transformer weighs 804,000 pounds and is capable of supplying power to a mid-sized city.
The Efacec Power Transformer facility in Rincon announced that the unit is being shipped on a special 200-foot-long railcar, which left last week.
The Savannah Morning News reports that the transformer is bound for one of the largest investor-owned electric utilities in the nation, but the destination is a mystery since the utility asked that its name not be used.
The newspaper reports that the transformer is the biggest the Portuguese-based Efacec Group has ever made and is the largest manufactured domestically in the last two decades.
