Maggie Midkiff laces up her sneakers one shoe at a time just like everybody else but its what she does when they are tied that makes her special.
Maggie has been playing basketball for Mount de Sales since the 7th grade and says her time on the court gives her a much needed break from running the pitch as a soccer standout for the Lady Cavs. And even as a junior, her basketball coach Mia Washington says she is a natural born leader.
Washington explains, "Maggie is an outstanding player. She comes in and she works hard, day in and day out. She's one of our co-captains and is definitely one of the hardest working girls on the floor."
Maggie doesn't just score big goals on the playing fields but also in the classroom. She sports a 4.0 GPA, which is a major priority for this athlete of the week.
"Grades have always been important to me since elementary school", says Midkiff. "So I've always worked hard. Because I know in college, I'm going to need good grades to get scholarships and hopefully I can go to the school I want to and my parents have always been on me about good grades and I just like learning so it's all good."
Washington echoes her sentiments, "She has a great work ethic. She gets it done inside the classroom and outside. She has a lot of AP and Honors courses but she takes care of business."
During this season, Maggie helped the Cavs pull a major upset over Arlington Christian, ending a 105 game winning streak. But the Cavs say they have bigger hopes for the season.
"We were ecstatic after the game", boasts Midkiff.
"We were pretty excited, jumping up and down. We were also pretty insane in the locker room, but we've just worked really hard this season and I thought we deserved it. We just came out and played our hardest."
Washington goes even further, "I'm expecting to go all the way. We have a lot of potential here in the gym. These ladies work hard and if they keep working hard, the sky is the limit. Were expecting to be in the final four." And Maggie is ready to help lead the way.
