Rock Hill, S.C.----Two Wingate University football student-athletes have been South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week award winners for the week ending Oct. 6, 2012, league officials announce Monday. Senior wide receiver Chris Bowden (Forsyth, Ga.) is the SAC Offensive Player of the Week, while redshirt sophomore wide receiver Cory McNulty (Jacksonville, Fla.) is the SAC Special Teams Player of the Week. Both players receive these awards for the first time.
A pre-season All-American, Bowden caught 16 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns as Wingate lost a tough 37-31 SAC decision to Mars Hill Saturday. The Mary Persons High School product continues to re-write the Bulldog record book. Bowden set the Wingate record for catches and yards in a game versus Mars Hill. He also becomes Wingate's all-time career reception leader with 214 thanks to his 16-catch day.
In four career games against the MHC Lions, Bowden has 35 catches for 572 yards and seven touchdowns. Saturday's contest was his 15th career game with seven receptions or more. Earlier this year, Bowden set the Wingate record for career touchdown receptions. He has 32 career TDs entering this week's play.
A Bishop Kenny High School product, McNulty blocked two Mars Hill punts Saturday. Both blocks occurred in the first quarter. His first block led to Wingate's initial touchdown of the afternoon. The Bulldogs' average first quarter drive started on the Wingate 46.
Wingate visits Newberry Saturday for a 4 p.m. SAC contest. Last year, the Bulldogs built an early 10-0 lead and survived a furious Newberry rally en route to a 31-29 victory at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field. Wingate denied a Newberry two-point conversion with 1:45 to play. Twenty of the 22 games in the Wingate-Newberry series have been decided by 12 points or less.
