The Mercer Bears Basketball program held their annual Tip-Off Banquet at Hawkins Arena inside of the University Center to jump start the college basketball season.
And the keynote speaker was none other than Professional Basketball Hall of Famer, George "Ice Man" Gervin. Gervin had a chance to mingle with players, coaches and fans before speaking to them formally at the banquet.
The living roundball legend, averaged more than 26 points per game during his career earning four league scoring titles.
Our own Frank Malloy introduced "the Ice man" who had a simple message for the student athletes of Mercer.
Gervin says, "If you want to get better that's what you're going to have to do. You're going to have to put in extra work. I don't think the time you spend with your coach is enough to excel to what you potentially can be. So get on your shots. Work on your timing whatever it takes, get your extra running in..those things added to what you daily at practice will make you a better player."
Coach Susie Gardner and the ladies have an exhibition matchup with Francis Marion on November 1st before opening with Brevard on the 9th while the Men's squad led by Coach Bob Hoffman will host Sewanee November 10th.
