MACON, Ga. - The Mercer women's basketball team hits the hardwood for the first time in the 2012-13 campaign when it hosts Division II member Francis Marion in an exhibition on Thursday evening at Hawkins Arena at 7 p.m.
In her third year at the helm, head coach Susie Gardner finally has experience on her squad; with an upperclassman laden roster at her disposal featuring three seniors and four juniors to go along with five sophomores and one freshman.
Francis Marion posted a 9-17 overall record last season and a 4-14 mark in Peach Belt Conference play. Taking care of the ball posed as the Patriots main problem last season, as they ranked last in the Peach Belt Conference averaging 21.2 turnovers per game. Francis Marion lost all five starters to graduation this past spring and return only three letterwinners back from last year's squad.
Last Time Out, t he Mercer women's basketball team ended its 2011-12 campaign on a high note after capturing a 73-66 win over Belmont on February 25 at the University Center.
Mercer won its second-straight contest to close the season after downing Lipscomb 67-61 just two days earlier.
Then junior Ry'van Buchanan and sophomore Briana Williams paced the Bears with 28 and 27 points, respectively, marking the third time during the 2011-12 season that both players scored 20 or more points in the same game.
Mercer is currently on a two-game winning streak entering the 2012-13 season after emerging victorious in its final two contests over Lipscomb and Belmont last season. The Bears are one of just seven teams in the nation on a two-game winning streak or better to begin the 2012-13 campaign.
