The Mercer men's basketball team split their weekend contests at North Florida and Jacksonville. The Bears defeated the Ospreys 66 to 47. Saturday, MU fought back from a 12-point deficit, but could not seal the deal against the Dolphins, falling 49-47.
They did all of this without Head Coach Bob Hoffman.
Hoffman picked up two technical fouls against Kennesaw State on January 5. He was ejected from the game. The Bears went on to lose 83-75.
The Atlantic Sun suspended Hoffman one game for his ejection. Mercer University's policy is to double any outside suspension. Therefore, Hoffman was not in the arena for the next two games.
"The thing that most people don't understand, I mean if they know me a little bit, I don't use language and I don't belittle folks," explained Hoffman. "It was just a strange set of circumstances that went down and I let my guys down and I would have loved to been there for them in that situation."
The Kennesaw game was Hoffman's first ejection. He credited his staff and players for stepping up in his absence.
"My staff has been amazing," said Hoffman. "They stepped up and did great things, all of them to give us that victory on Thursday night, which we're greatful for."
The Mercer Bears are back at home for the first time in three games. MU will host East Tennessee State on Thursday at 7 p.m.
