SARASOTA, Fla. (School Release) - The Mercer baseball team used some early offense and some quality relief pitching late to defeat Big East power Notre Dame 5-4 and take home the Snowbird Baseball Classic Title on Sunday afternoon in Sarasota, Fla.
Mercer (3-0) racked up its second win in as many days over a Big East foe and is a perfect 3-0 to start a season for the first time since 2011.
Sophomore Chesny Young was the hitting star of the afternoon for the Bears, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior David Teasley earned his second win of the season on the mound after working 3.2 innings of relief for Mercer.
Junior Trey Mancini got the Fighting Irish out to an early lead when he poked an RBI single up the middle in the top of the first inning to make the score 1-0 Notre Dame.
Mercer responded a few innings later when it touched up Notre Dame starter David Hearne for three runs in the top of the third. Junior Nate Moorhouse hit a solo home run, his second of the season, Young ripped an RBI triple and senior Evan Boyd collected an RBI groundout to put the Bears in front 3-1.
Notre Dame came right back with a run in the bottom half of the frame, however, thanks to an RBI triple by Mancini to trim Mercer's lead to 3-2.
Both teams pitching staff's matched zeros over the next couple innings until the Bears got into the Fighting Irish bullpen. Junior Derrick Workman laced an RBI single and a passed ball allowed junior Michael Massi to come around and make the score 5-2 Mercer in the top of the sixth.
With the score still 5-2, Notre Dame plated a pair of runs after an RBI double by junior Eric Jagielo and a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-4 Mercer in the bottom of the seventh.
Sophomore Dimitri Kourtis would do the rest from that point forward, throwing 2.2 innings of scoreless relief and getting out of a few jams to close out the win for Mercer and pick up his first save of the 2013 campaign.
Mercer stays on the road for its next contest, when it travels to Montgomery to take on Alabama State on February 19. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
