Press release from Mercer University:
MACON, Ga. - Junior guard Anthony White Jr. led a quartet of Mercer players in double-figures as the Bears cruised to an 83-58 win over Lipscomb in Thursday night's Atlantic Sun men's basketball game at Hawkins Arena.
Mercer's seventh-straight win pushed the team to 19-9 (12-3 A-Sun) while Lipscomb slipped to 10-16 (5-10 A-Sun). The Bears also moved to 12-0 at home this season, extending their home court winning streak to 14.
White Jr. tallied his season-high 15 points in 20 minutes of work, while also collecting a rebound and an assist. Joining him double figure scoring were senior Travis Smith (13 points), junior Bud Thomas (10 points) and junior Jakob Gollon (10 points).
A tight contest at the outset saw Mercer trailing by a point nearly nine minutes in before ripping off seven unanswered to gain breathing room. Late in the half, the Bears still led by six before closing the period on a 15-0 surge to take a 38-17 lead into intermission.
Out of the break, the Bears blitzed the Bisons with a 17-4 charge that gave the hosts a 55-21 lead with 16:19 to play. From there, the Orange and Black would go ahead by as many as 36 before the final whistle.
White Jr. led six Mercer reserves in scoring as the Bears' bench outplayed the Bisons' backups to the tune of a 39-15 score. Junior center Monty Brown chipped in eight points, senior Chris Smith and sophomore T.J. Hallice scored five, junior Darious Moten scored four and junior Kevin Canevari added two.
Mercer's 83 points was a season-high and came on 28 baskets with 22 assists. Junior point guard Langston Hall and Gollon each dished five helpers while Canevari notched four of his own.
With three regular season games left, the Bears are now on the doorstep of booking the program's first back-to-back 20-win seasons. Mercer eyes number 20 hosting Northern Kentucky on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
