MACON, Ga. (School Release) - The Mercer baseball team is off to its best start in the 65-year modern history of the program following a doubleheader sweep of Miami (Ohio) on Saturday afternoon at Claude Smith Field.

Mercer (11-1) won game one 9-6 before running away with an 11-0 triumph in game two to sweep the three-game weekend series from Miami (2-6)

Mercer's 11-1 mark to start the 2013 campaign is its best start after 12 games in program history, beating out the previous record of 10-2 set by the 2012, 1970 and 1969 editions of the Bears.

The Bears 11 total wins are tied for the second-most in the nation while today's victories extended their home winning streak to 14-straight games, the fifth-longest active streak in the country.

Sophomore Grant Papelian picked up his second win of the season in game one after throwing six innings and allowing three runs on four hits to go along with four strikeouts.

Classmate Chesny Young drove in a career-high six runs to pace the Mercer offense in game one, while junior Sasha LaGarde set season-highs with four hits and three runs scored in the win.

Game two was all about the pitching performance delivered by junior starting pitcher DJ Johnson. The Adel, Ga. native needed just 111 pitches to throw a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit while striking out four to pick up his second win of the season.

The only hit Johnson allowed during the contest was a clean single through the left side of the infield between third base and shortstop by junior Matt Packer with two outs in the top of the seventh inning.

Senior catcher David Reid-Foley had the big hit in the contest for Mercer, delivering a bases clearing double in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 6-0.

Mercer is back in action when it travels to Atlanta for a mid-week battle with ACC power No. 20 Georgia Tech on March 5. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Russ-Chandler Field.
