MACON, Ga. (School Release)- The Mercer sand volleyball team is set to host Alabama-Birmingham on Wednesday in the 2013 home opener at the Mercer Sand Volleyball Complex. Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
UAB is 2-3 on the season after splitting a pair of matches against Stetson and Tulane in the Tulane Tournament on March 16. The Blazers topped Stetson 4-1 before falling to host Tulane 3-2.
Mercer and UAB have already squared off once this season, with UAB claiming a 5-0 victory in the season opener for both teams on March 9. Last season, UAB swept the two-match season series in the inaugural year of competition for both schools.
The Blazers return 11 letterwinners from last year's team that finished 6-4. Among the returners is senior Kirsten Gallagher, who teamed with former Blazer Heather Thomas to advance to the championship bracket of the 2012 ACVA Sand Volleyball Pairs Championship.
Mercer aims for its first win of the season after falling by a 3-2 count at Georgia State on March 12. So far this season, the Bears have seen three different pairings capture match victories. Against Georgia State, senior Codi Schepp
and junior Zoe Becton
won in the No. 4 pairing and junior Emily Rochefort
and sophomore Caroline Carlton
triumphed in the No. 5 pairing. Against Tulane, senior Jennifer Katona
and freshman Molly Locke
took home a 2-1 victory.
UAB and Mercer were among the 15 NCAA Division I schools to sponsor sand volleyball for the first season in 2012. In 2013, 15 additional schools have signed on to sponsor the sport.
