This spring, the Mercer softball team is swinging for a top 6 conference finish so they can compete in the ASUN tourney in early May.
Last season at about this time, the Bears ended the year on a 13 game losing streak to end their chances of postseason.
This go round, head ocach James DeFeo in his second full season away from LSU has the softball team at 21-16, but more importantly 9-3 in the ASUN sitting in fourth place.
With only two seniors, DeFeo says the team is fairly young with Junior McKenzie Woody leading the nation with 59 hits, he says he likes the teams chances if they can stay healthy.
DeFeo explains, "We're really thin. We have a lot of injuries. We really can't afford to have any more people drop out so we have a lot of different people in different positions but the good thing is our roster is chock full of good athletes. We have a bunch of kids that can play a lot of different positions so someone maybe playing the outfield one game and switch back into the infield the next game. That's definetly one of our strengths, we are athletically gifted overall.
Mercer opens a conference series with Jacksonville beginning Friday and ending with a double header on Saturday.
