Ellen Marie Jones loves the game of soccer as a fan and even more so as a player on the pitch.

Her coach, Jennifer Raymond agrees, "She's a great young lady. She works hard and gives 110% in everything she does. She's a joy to coach."

It's also a joy that the sophomore excels at the game. In fact, so much her teammates named her a captain along with two other seniors.

"That's a privilege given to her," says Raymond. "The kids voted on that. They voted for two seniors and voted for her. It just shows the type of leadership she has, the ability she has and the work ethic."

Jones says, "I just like making the runs, making the passes, connecting the passes and playing together. I play anywhere where I'm needed."

Her jersey bears "#1" during the games, and she doesn't settle for less in the classroom either. The 15-year-old makes all A's and carries a 4.0 GPA.

"I take my school work very personally", Jones explains. "And I make sure that I have the grades. Because it's very important that I have the grades to get the job I want. Grades are very important. That's how you get your diploma, your degree and into college. It's everything."

And as the regular season winds down, Ellen Marie and her teammates have already clinched a berth in the state playoffs, but the co-captain wants more for her seniors because she believes they have earned it.

"Our team is like a family. We work together and act like a family. We support each other and that's just how we work. We don't let any drama come between us. That's how we work," says Jones.

Jones and Central take on Westside in a non-region match-up on Monday.
