MACON, Ga. (School Release) - After leading the Mercer baseball team to a perfect 4-0 week, sophomore third baseman Chesny Young was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
The Bears had a noteworthy week on the diamond, collecting a 10-2 mid-week win over Alabama State before making national headlines by sweeping its weekend series against No. 24 Florida Gulf Coast at home this past weekend.
Young had a breakout performance at the plate for the Bears, batting .444 (8-for-18) for the week to go along with a .500 on-base percentage, four runs scored, a home run and four RBI. Young delivered a walk-off RBI single to give the Bears a 4-3 win over FGCU on Saturday and following that up with a 3-for-5 outing with two RBI and two runs scored in the series finale victory on Sunday.
The Player of the Week award is Young's second of the season as the Atlanta, Ga. native is having a sparkling 2013 campaign, leading the A-Sun Conference with 62 hits while ranking second with 38 runs scored and third with 40 RBI.
Mercer gets a day off before traveling to Statesboro for a mid-week contest against Georgia Southern on April 16. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at J.I. Clements Stadium.
