MACON, Ga. (School Release) - Junior Randi Rea and freshman Natalie Shiver each had a pair of RBI as the Mercer softball team dropped two games to Lipscomb by scores of 8-0 and 10-6 at Sikes Field on Saturday afternoon. Mercer fell to 23-28 (10-13 A-Sun) with the losses while Lipscomb improved to 26-21 (13-7 A-Sun).
In game one, Mercer senior pitcher Kerri Nidiffer and Lipscomb junior pitcher Heather Parker matched zeros in the two innings before the Bisons broke through with the game's first run in the top of the third. The visitors struck again in the fifth, as junior Kristen Sturdivant hit a grand slam to left center and freshman Mickey Bell drew an RBI walk.
With a six-run lead, Parker cruised through the final two innings on her way to a three-hit shutout performance. Her effort elevated her record to 10-11 on the year while Nidiffer took the loss and dropped to 11-14.
In the first inning of game two, Rea lifted a two-RBI base hit to center field and sophomore Rachel Hugghins registered an RBI infield single to stake the Orange and Black to a 3-0 lead. Junior pitcher Julia Rice cruised through the first five innings and Mercer's lead was still 3-0 when the Bisons put up eight runs in the top of the sixth.
After Lipscomb added another two in the seventh, Mercer got a rally going as senior Sara Santana stroked a triple to right field and junior Krista Kennedy followed with an RBI single. Two batters later, Shiver delivered a two-out, two-RBI double to right field to cut the deficit to four.
Lipscomb freshman pitcher Tanner Sanders got the next batter to fly out to secure her 15th win of the season. Rice was credited with the loss and fell to 12-13.
Mercer returns to Sikes Field on Sunday to conclude the series with Lipscomb. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
