MACON, Ga. (School Release)- After leading the Mercer baseball team to a 4-1 week, junior designated hitter Nick Backlund was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
Mercer started the week by splitting a two-game mid-week series at Florida A&M before traveling to Spartanburg and sweeping a three-game series from USC Upstate this past weekend.
Backlund had a breakout performance at the plate for the Bears, batting .500 (10-for-20) for the week to go along with a .600 on-base percentage, seven runs scored, a home run and 10 RBI. Backlund tallied four multi-hit games during the week, including tying his season-high with three hits and four RBI in a 12-5 win over USC Upstate on April 26.
The Player of the Week award is the second of Backlund's career and the first during his remarkable 2013 campaign. The San Jose, Calif. native is currently leading the A-Sun Conference in RBI (60), doubles (18), home runs (11) and total bases (114).
Backlund and the rest of the Bears now enjoy an eight-day break as they return to campus for finals all this week. Mercer returns to the diamond when it welcomes Belmont to Macon for a two-game mid-week series starting on May 7.
