MACON, Ga. (School Release)- Mercer University men's basketball head coach Bob Hoffman added depth to his 2013-14 backcourt on Tuesday, inking Phillip Leonard of Northern Oklahoma Tonkawa College to a National Letter of Intent. Leonard is set to join the squad with three years of eligibility in the 2013 fall semester.
"He's a tremendous student-athlete who has ability to be on the floor at a high level," Hoffman said. "As a great passer, he's got a knack for finding open players. We're excited about Phillip joining us for next season."
A 2012 graduate of Union High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Leonard spent last season helping lead the Mavs to a 27-4 record while averaging 7.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. During the campaign, Leonard also shot 51.2% from the field and registered a 2.9 assist-to-turnover ratio.
In high school, the six-foot-two, 190-pound guard helped lead Union to an unblemished 29-0 record and state championship season as a senior. He joins guard D.J. Brooks (Simpsonville, S.C.) as the second member of Hoffman's current recruiting class. Brooks and Leonard aim to fill a void left by departing senior guards Chris Smith and Travis Smith.
