Every spring thousands of Central Georgians do a Relay for Life event to help raise money for breast cancer.
This year, there is a twist to the classic theme that has folks walking around a track.
Personal trainer Dana Thomason Bittenbender has friends in California. Bittenbender says Macon and Newport Beach will team up in a solidarity event.
"Macon, Georgia, believe it or not, is the first city to do this," she said with a smile.
Saturday, folks in both cities will get on boards and work their way through the water.
Bittenbender says paddling is taking off as a sport.
But of course the bigger issue is remembering and helping out people with cancer.
"It is in honor of Susan G. Komen and I'm paddling in honor of my friend Corey who has a rare form of cancer," Bittenbender explained. "There are people coming up to me and saying, 'Can I just swim?' They're my open water swimmers, and I have people that just want to kayak because we only have so many boards in Macon, Georgia."
So you have numerous ways to get involved.
If you register online and pay the $35, you will get a really cool pink dry fit shirt. Visit www.standup-for-the-cure.org.
It's this Saturday morning at 9a.m. Dana says meet at the Lake Juliette boat landing.
