NEW YORK (AP) - Fans of one of New York City's most famous urban sports are honoring their best players at the Stickball Hall of Fame.

Hall of Fame President Carlos Diaz says six players are being inducted Friday, selected by an executive committee of old-timers who have been following the sport since its heyday in the 1940s and '50s.

Stickball is like baseball but is played on city streets, where players use a broomstick for a bat and a rubber ball instead of a baseball. Hitters are allowed one chance to hit and the field of play is determined by street lamps, manhole covers and parked cars.

Diaz says 2,000 people play stickball competitively in leagues in New York, Florida, California, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Panama.
