WXIA -- Alabama sophomore Geno Smith, who was a former standout football player for St. Pius X, was charged with driving under the influence Sunday morning and booked by the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office, according to AL.com.

The sheriff's department confirmed the report Sunday afternoon.

Smith's bond has been set at $1,000.

As a freshman in 2012, the 6-foot, 186-pound defensive back played in all 13 games for the Crimson Tide, including the SEC Championship and the National Championship.

Smith was a highly recruited player out of St. Pius. ESPN had the former Golden Lion star as the nation's second-best cornerback and the No. 31 player in the 2012 ESPNU 150.

He was also the No. 16 prospect in the ESPNU Southeast Top 100 and the No. 3 player in the state of Georgia.
