PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) - In a heart-warming halftime ceremony, Eric LeGrand has become the first football player in the 144-year history of Rutgers football to have his jersey retired.
With current coach Kyle Flood at his side, the paralyzed LeGrand looked up to the top of High Point Solutions Stadium as a banner was lowered to reveal his No. 52 on the box where the game is filmed.
The 23-year-old LeGrand was given a sword by the Scarlet Knights with the word "believe" inscribed on it.
Since being paralyzed from the neck down in a game against Army in 2010, LeGrand has said he believes he will walk again, and he reiterated it Saturday to a crowd that gave him a standing ovation as he came on the field and never sat down.
