The Lady Dogs of GMC Prep have had a lot of success over the past couple of years on the softball diamond, thanks to players like Whitley Dunn. The sophomore outfielder helps lead the team on a sport that she never thought would be her favorite.
Whitley said, "I've been playing softball since I was 10 years old, but when I was little, I wasn't real good, but I've worked really hard at it."
Worked so hard at it that she now is starting for the Class A runner-ups and was leading the team in batting average to start the season.
"While she played on and off last season, she has started every game for us in right field this year, doing a phenomenal job. She's leading the team in hitting, batting right under 500, doing a great job and stepping up as a sophomore," said Coach Brooker.
The Lady Dogs are 15-2 and looking to return back in the State playoffs so they can work their way back into a championship series for the public state title, something they want to correct from last season.
"I thought about it all year and made me feel like I want to get better at it, so all summer we worked really hard," said Whitley.
In the classroom, Dunn works just as hard earning all As and claiming Physical Science as her favorite class.
Whitley said, "Grades are really important because you have to get into college with good grades. No college person is going to look at you if you have bad grades."
So as GMC makes a run, Coach Brooker is more than glad to have Whitley along for the ride.
"Whitley's a great all-around kid. She's strong in the classroom and strong on the ball field. Knowing I have her for this year and two more is encouraging for sure," said Brooker.
So far this year, Whitley has a 3.2 GPA, and her batting average stands at a lofty .528, which has helped her team achieve the #1 power ranking among Class A Public schools this week.
