BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - An own goal and three second half strikes lifted No. 20 UAB to a 4-0 win over the Mercer men's soccer team on Saturday evening at West Campus Field.
UAB (4-1-1) out-shot Mercer (1-6) 15-9 overall and held a slight 7-5 edge in shots on goal in the contest.
The Bears hung tough with the Blazers over the first 42 minutes of the game, until a bad break changed the entire dynamic of the game. An own goal by Mercer gave UAB a fortuitous 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Things quickly fell apart for Mercer coming out of intermission, as UAB put home two more goals over the opening 15 minutes of the second half.
Junior Ian Michalak capped the scoring in the contest in the 86th minute when he collected a rebound off a save by Mercer goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh and deposited it into the back of the net to make the final score 4-0.
The 4-0 loss for Mercer was the programs worst since a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Ivy League member Penn back in 2008, current head coach Brad Ruzzo's first year at the helm.
Mercer is back in action on September 24 when it stays on the road to take on No. 22 Memphis. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Mike Rose Stadium.
