MACON, Ga. -The Mercer men's golf team put the finishing touches on a signature victory on Sunday, outplaying a field of the nation's elite programs to capture the Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship.  Senior Hans Reimers and freshman Emmanuel Kountakis highlighted Mercer's performance, taking home co-champion honors with three-round totals of 207 (-9).

As a team, Mercer followed its tournament record-setting round of 272 on Saturday with a 281 on Sunday to win by two strokes over Georgia Tech, who currently boasts the No. 2 ranking in the latest Golf Coaches Association of America top-25 poll.  Virginia Tech (849), Georgia (853) and South Florida (860) rounded out the top five teams.

Mercer's victory cannot be understated, as the field featured six of the nation's top-30 teams as ranked by Golfweek magazine.  Reimers' medalist position was the first of his collegiate career and his fifth top-five performance.  Kountakis' co-champion spot came in just his second collegiate event after he took a tie for 16th place at Louisville's Cardinal Intercollegiate last week.

Reimers collected rounds of 73, 65 and 69 in the tournament while Kountakis shot 68, 69 and 70.  The pair joined Georgia Tech senior Seth Reeves as co-champions, with all three players registering tournament totals of 207.

Freshman Sean Smothers recorded the first top 10 of his collegiate career, posting scores of 71, 68 and 72 to tie for ninth at 211.  Junior Trey Rule signed for a pair of 72's and a 70 to tie for 19th at 214.  Senior James Beale rounded out Mercer's competitors, tying for 22nd place with a 56-hole total of 216 (74-70-72).

Sophomores Jeffrey Heinicka Jr, Parks Brown and Evan Usry also competed in the event as indidviduals.  Heinicka Jr. tied for 37th at 221 (75-75-71), Brown tied for 61st at 226 (75-75-76) and Usry took 74th at 232 (74-76-82).

The win was the program's first tournament championship since winning the Frito Lay Intercollegiate on February 21, 2011.  The Bears have not registered top-five finishes in all three events this fall.

Mercer returns to competitive play in Georgia State's AutoTrader.com Classic on October 14.  The two day event will be contested at Berkley Hills Country Club in Duluth, Ga.
