DELAND, Fla. - Looking to build on a big result against FGCU, the Mercer men's soccer team came up short in a 1-0 loss at Stetson on Sunday afternoon at the Stetson Athletic Complex.
Despite out-shooting Stetson 18-14, including an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal, Mercer (3-11-1, 1-3-1 A-Sun) failed to score a goal for the second-straight game.
Looking for their first road win over the Hatters since 2000, the Bears allowed Stetson to score an early goal when Chase Rodgers banged home a rebound attempt after a Greg Ranjitsingh save to give the home team a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute of play.
The Bears tried desperately to chase a game-tying goal piling up 12 shots in the second half.
Mercer seemed to tie things up in the 77thminute of the contest, but its goal was waved off due to an offside call.
Senior defender Joey Heavner continued to move up in the A-Sun Conference record books as his start today was the 74th of his career, which is tied with former teammate Will Betts for the most in Mercer history and the fifth-most in league history.
Ranjitsingh had three saves in the loss while senior Ryan King paced the Bears with four shots.
Mercer returns home for its final home game of the 2013 season when it welcomes North Florida into town on October 26. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bear Field.
