MACON, Ga. - Mercer senior left-handed pitcher Brandon Love received a chance to continue his baseball career when he signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Sunday afternoon.
Love flew to Los Angeles this past weekend, worked out for the team and passed a fitness test before signing a one-year contract. The Augusta, Ga. native will spend the next two weeks throwing bullpen sessions and working in simulated game action before reporting to the AZL Angels in the Arizona Rookie League.
Love had a brilliant career with Mercer, compiling a 23-9 overall record, 231 strikeouts and a 4.48 ERA. He paced the Bears to a 38-21 overall record this past spring by going 7-3 in 16 starts while striking out 75 in 88.1 innings pitched.
"I am so happy for Brandon in that he received this great opportunity to continue his baseball career," said head coach Craig Gibson. "I know Brandon was disappointed that he wasn't drafted, but he signed early with the Angles and I have no doubt he will take advantage of this chance he has been given and pitch well over there."
