MACON, Ga. (School Release) - The awards keep coming for the 2012 edition of the Mercer men's soccer team, as four members were named National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Region selection on Monday morning.
Senior defender Josh Shutter was named Second Team All-Region while sophomores Carl-Oscar Andersson, Ashani Samuels and Greg Ranjitsingh were all named Third Team All-Region selections.
The quartet mark the first Mercer men's soccer players voted to an NSCAA All-Region squad since midfielder Ian Cameron was named a third team selection back in 2009.
Shutter, Ranjitsingh, Andersson and Samuels were four of just nine Atlantic Sun Conference players to earn All-Region honors and were the only players from the three Division I schools in the state of Georgia selected.
For Shutter, the honor caps a stellar three-year career with Mercer that saw him develop into one of the top center backs in the country. The Sinking Spring, Pa. native had seven points on two goals and three assists this season and has already been recognized for his play by being voted an A-Sun All-Conference first team selection and named the A-Sun Conference Defender of the Year.
His partner on the Bears backline, Samuels, is no slouch himself, using his 6-4 frame to become one of the most feared defenders in the A-Sun. The West Moreland, Jamaica native had eight points in 2012 on three goals and two assists and was also named to the A-Sun All-Conference first team.
Andersson has already shown that he is one of the best midfielders in the conference and the unquestioned leader of a Bears offense that has scored 56 goals over the past two seasons. The Falkenberg, Sweden product recorded 11 points on three goals and five assists this season and now has a Third Team All-Region selection to go along with an All-Conference second team nod.
Ranjitsingh's regional honor comes after a season that was one of the best for a goalkeeper in the nation. The A-Sun All-Conference second team netminder led the league with a 0.87 goals against average and 93 saves and ranked 12th in the country with a sparkling .838 save percentage.
2012 A-Sun Conference Coach of the Year Brad Ruzzo welcomes back Samuels, Andersson, Ranjitsingh and three others starters back from this year's squad that went 11-7-2 and lost in the A-Sun Championship title game.
