Bears roll past ETSU

The Mercer women's basketball team received a season-high 25 points from Briana Williams and shot over 50-percent from the field to rout ETSU 80-50 Saturday afternoon on Senior Day inside Hawkins Arena in Atlantic Sun Conference action.

The Bears (14-12, 7-8) sweep the season series from ETSU and clinch a spot in the upcoming A-Sun Tournament, while the Buccaneers (8-17, 4-10) come up short in their bid for consecutive wins.

Mercer dominated from the opening tip and turned 12 first-half ETSU turnovers into 21 points the other way to take a commanding 43-25 lead at the intermission. The Bears used a 14-0 run midway through the opening period and led by as many as 22 points in the first half before settling for an 18-point lead at halftime.

The Bears continued to stay red hot from the field in the second half when Kendra Grant drilled a jumper on the opening possession to catapult Mercer into a 15-5 run.

The shots continued to fall and the Bears took their largest lead of the game at 32 points with eight minutes remaining and cruised to an 80-50 victory.

"This was our most complete game of the year," said head coach Susie Gardner following the victory. "We made a lot of shots, but we did the right things to have open looks and that led to the high percentage."

The 51.2 percent performance from the floor is the second-highest of the year for Mercer, as the Bears scored 34 points in the paint, recorded 16 fast break points and outscored ETSU 37-17 in bench points.

Briana Williams led four Mercer players in double figures with 25, while Precious Bridges added 16, Kate Alemann tallied 14 and Kendra Grant followed with 10. Sharnea Boykin dished out eight assists in the victory and moved into fifth place all-time in A-Sun history with 614 career assists.

Following the game, Mercer honored Alemann, Boykin and Grant who all played in their final regular season home games inside Hawkins Arena. The trio paced Mercer to the best Division I turn around in the country last season and will lead the Bears into back-to-back A-Sun Tournament appearances for the first time in the last five years.

The Bears will have a full week to prepare for its final road swing of the season, traveling to Kennesaw State Saturday, March 1 for a 3:30 p.m. tip against the Owls. Mercer will then close out the regular season in the River city, taking on North Florida (Mar. 6) and Jacksonville (Mar. 8).
