San Antonio, TX (Sports Network) - Dawn Woodard posted a 3-under 69 on
Saturday to grab a 2-shot lead after the first round of the U.S. Women's Mid-
Amateur Championship.
Woodard opened with birdies on one and two. She moved to 3-under with a birdie
at five, but bogeys at seven and eight dropped her back to minus-1. Around the
turn, Woodard had birdies on 13 and 16 to go with seven pars to grab the
first-round lead.
Lucy Nunn was the only other player in red figures, as she carded a 1-under
71.
Robin Burke, a semifinalist in 2010, managed an even-par 72. She shares third
place with Mariko Makabe, Tobi Herron and Mercedes Huarte.
Martha Leach, the 2009 winner and last year's runner-up, and 2010 semifinalist
Brooke Williams are tied at plus-1. Meghan Stasi, a 3-time champion, shares
ninth at 2-over 74, while reigning champion Ellen Port is tied for 31st at
plus-4.
Port won her record fourth title at this championship last year.
