Houston County wins state title

Hunt Smith smashed a grand slam to propel the Houston County boys to an 8-6 win over Whitewater in the championship game of the GHSA 5A baseball series at Whitewater Tuesday afternoon in Fayette County.

Smith's blast followed an intentional walked and helped the Bears overcome an early 3-0 deficit. The grand slam put HoCo up 7-4.

Josh Profit added an insurance run with a home run in the 6th inning to give Houston County an 8-6 lead.

Justin Jones was the winning pitcher for the Bears. Jones got the final out of the game on a ground ball back to him on the mound. He tossed to Tanner Hall for the final out setting off a HoCo celebration.

The championship is the first GHSA baseball state title for a Houston County school since Perry won a championship in 1991.

HoCo and Whitewater split a doubleheader on Monday with Whitewater winning in walk-off fashion in Game One and HoCo winning on a Justin Jones walk-off hit in Game Two.
