Signing Day 2012 will include a new wrinkle in Central Georgia. With Mercer fielding a team in the fall, Bobby Lamb will sign his first class on February 1st. Last week the program got its first commitment from its own backyard.
Mount de Sales defensive end/tight end John Garrett Abernathy informed Bobby Lamb of his plans to sign with the Bears. Abernathy isn't sure where he will fit in with the Orange and Black - he finished his senior season with four sacks - but he does expect to see action at long snapper.
The Cavalier standout says the facilities being built were a big draw, as well as the opportunity to play division I FCS football.
Lamb told Abernathy he was the first to get on board, but that's not the distinction JG is most excited about.
"I want to be a part of the first football team," Abernathy said. "It's not that big of a deal that I'm the first one to commit ever. I just want to be a part of the first football team, with a group of guys who are also part of that first team.
"The facilities, the coaching staff, Coach Lamb, Coach Farrington they're all awesome. The fact that when I got on campus, I knew that was where I was supposed to be."
'JG' said one factor that played into his decision was the year he'll have to get acclimated with the college life, before the Bears' first competitive season in 2013.
National Signing Day is February 1st.
