He is a future Baseball Hall of Famer, that played some of his earliest pro ball in Macon. Tuesday he returned to help kick off Mercer's baseball season at their annual First Pitch Classic.

Long time Braves third baseman Chipper Jones was the guest speaker at Mercer's event. He signed autographs for fans before taking the podium.

Jones' minor league days included a stint at Luther Williams Field. He's spent his entire big league career in Atlanta and says he is looking forward to his 18th season at the hot corner, while hoping his history of knee injuries won't get in the way.

"I've been able to get myself ready this year and not be worried about rehabbing an injury," Jones said. "I'm looking forward to it, and this year will tell me if it's time to go. If I get to this year and can't continue to go as hard as I've prepared through this winter, then maybe it's time to go. But I have no qualms about saying that I really hope that I can play next year as well. So we'll see."

The Braves open up the 2012 season April 5th with a visit to the Mets. Their home opener is April 13th against the Brewers.

As for the Bears, Craig Gibson's squad takes Claude Smith Field February 17th against Morehead State.
